What a Company is looking for in Engineering Students?

We are looking for engineers that are bright, curious, who are well founded in the basics, that can be certainly be attained from a top University.  Engineering students should also have the ability to work in teams, the ability to communicate, and as the topic of conversation today, have International experience to be able to value and gauge other cultures from around the world.

A couple of things that have changed in engineering are that engineers are more International in scope and engineers are more interdisciplinary in scope, both of which require communication skills that are different than in the past.  Engineers have to be able to accept ideas from other folks and understand the context that they are coming from.  One thing that has not changed about engineering, is engineering is still a social exercise, so we have to be able to work in teams.  Engineers have to be able to understand our customers so that we can deliver products to them that they can use very effectively and will value in all of their applications.

In the context of International experience there are several things engineering students can do, one is to take a foreign language, any foreign language.  The engineering student will be exposed to different cultures and will also be exposed to some of the different issues other people have as they are trying to communicate with us in English.  This develops the sensitivity to communicate with others in their own language.  It is important to just get out there and take the opportunity to travel abroad and take opportunities that Universities may offer to study abroad.  Some of these courses can have ties to large foreign companies, so engineering students can go overseas to teach and work on projects in locations such as China and India.

Anything that can be done to broaden your exposure as an engineering student, even learning from International students and meeting people from other countries, is a great way to learn about their experiences and how they view life differently in their countries compared to the United States.
